EDIT: ANDROID 2.2 USERS CLICK BELOW (ALMOST EVERYONE NOW)

NEW GUI ROOT METHOD!

Froyo GUI Root ~ Sil3ntKi11

This is a GUI program to root/unroot your DroidX phone. No Android SDK install required. All drivers are installed if needed.

Just two buttons, ROOT and UNROOT! Follow the instructions on the screen and you'll be rooted in a matter of seconds!

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE USB DEBUGGING ENABLED UNDER System > Applications > Development ON YOUR PHONE!

EDIT: If it doesn't root and you are turning Bluetooth on and off, try turning WiFi on/off instead!

Microsoft Windows only. You need the .NET 3.5 Framework but Vista and Windows 7 already come with the framework.

Enjoy!

YOU MUST EXTRACT ALL OF THE FOLDERS, ETC. THEN RUN! OTHERWISE IT WON'T WORK.

RIGHT CLICK AND RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR

Edit: Windows XP, Mac OSX and Ubuntu Linux Support Coming Soon

Edit: MediaFire link for those w/o an account. (edit by rainabba: we've opened downloads to guests!)

Edit: Still give props to Birdman and the rest of the community. This is simply putting their work (with some modifications to exploid) to use.

Edit: I am not responsible for anything that happens to your phone. Please use at your own risk.

At the moment, rootshell is left on the device for easy unrooting. It is modified so that only my program may use it, however, if someone does

figure out away around using rootshell, I am not held responsible. This feature will be replaced with using su in the next release!

Edit:

Warning: Apparently if some /system/app .apks are missing when you try to update, the update will fail. Please do not remove /system/app .apk

unless you have backed your phone up (I made this mistake with the original root =[ haha). Next version will automatically backup for /system/app folder to your /sdcard/. I'll try to post a working backup folder for those who didn't back it up.

** Required for .604 update **

Hah this is awesome on so many levels.  I'm good with adb but this should help a lot of people.

Thank you.

Make sure you press allow when Superuser.apk pops up on your phone.

This is most likely why you can't run rooted apps.

You're amazing if this works.  I'm new to Android (three generation iPhone user here) and though I've been jailbreaking iPhones for 3 years now, I never got a request to root/flash (I know the DX can't be flashed yet) in that time.  I tried using ADB to root, but it wouldn't push the files.

EDIT:  Do I have to be in PC Mode? USB Mass Storage?  Does Bluetooth have to be on to begin with or off?

PC Mode works fine. Just make sure you have USB Debugging enabled under Settings > Applications > Development.

This does use adb but hopefully this works for you. It could've been a driver issue on your side, in which case this program should fix that.

I'll be updating this with bug fixes as I go, also adding bloatware removal, app installation, backup, etc!

Edit: You can use bluetooth or wifi and it doesn't matter what state its in as long as you are trying to turn it on or off. If it doesn't root the first time,

you probably just didn't time it right. Just do it again and all should be well!

It's so weird, I didn't toggle anything the first time I rooted my X (through ADB) and it rooted fine, I thought it was a joke.

This is not working for me either, I'm going to try the longer method later. I just got my X in the mail today it has 604 preloaded on it. Tried on WinXP and Vista.

When I connect the droid to the computer it asks me to find drivers, I tried manually installing the ADB Composite driver, but still didn't work.

There are Motorolla drivers that you need to install. Go into the drivers folder and install the Moto package depending on if you have a 64 bit or 32 bit OS. I will try to replicate the error on my side.

I probably should've mentioned that you need to extract the zip file to your HD for it to work. Running out of the zip folder doesn't allow the program to access the other files it needs in those subdirectories. Just extract to folder and run. Should work fine.

Try WiFi instead. Edit: And you should be in PC Mode on your DroidX. That doesn't matter. I lied haha.

Will unrooting with this program work if you used the long method to root in the first-place?

That means adb can't find your DroidX. Go to the drivers folder and install Moto_32bit or Moto_64 bit depending on your system. Restart and then try.

Sort of. I know this will sound weird, but if you re-root your phone with this program (nothing will be affected), then yes you can un-root. So just re-root it using this method and then un-root it. A little quirk but it works. I will add that functionality automatically in next release.

I ran this and when I clicked Root, the buttons disappeared (but the window was still there) and it looked like nothing happened.
However, I just checked and I have Superuser.apk in there and I was able to install and use the wireless tether app in the market, so I'm definitely rooted. :)

Are you using Windows XP? And that's great. Sorry I am still working out the bugs.
