So I had no problem rooting and unrooting my phone. And I THOUGHT I was careful not to delete any of the apps needed to update to 2.2. But, when I do the OTA update, it fails.
I even tried resetting the phone to factory before updating, and it still doesn't work. (Most of the apps i deleted are still missing... Swype, Skype and some others.)
Help anyone?

Ok, I am pretty sure I have your solution. I also rooted my phone and deleted a few things like 3G hotspot among other things useless to me.

After deleting the "stuff" I didn't want I unrooted the phone. All was grand.

I never installed a leaked version of Froyo 2.2. I was fine with waiting for the official OTA.

Then when the official version came along, I downloaded it... and FAIL. The install was looking for all the original "stuff" I deleted before. Frustration started creeping into my head.

Alas, I came to Alldroid.org, and within a day I had my answers.

Please check out the thread below on what to do.

I almost forgot...

In the thread I am referring you to.

In the homewrecker #2 post, you WILL need the files found at the website provided. On the webpage containing the files, up near the top of the page is 2 versions of Droid X files. On your phone goto "settings" then "about phone" and make sure you get the proper files that match your phone.

Good Luck, let me know how it goes.

I deleted the cityID.apk and now cannot update to 2.2. I believe this mising apk file in my system/app is my problem. I copied the application to my sd card but cannot (or don't know how) transfer it into my system/app location via rootexplorer. I also attempted to push the app using adb push cityid.apk /system/app/cityid.apk but get a permission denied message. I ensured via rootexplorer. r/w was initiated. Any help is appreciated.

What you should do is hit the search button as it's trying to update so you can actually see what it's failing on. When the little android with a triangle shows up during the install, just hit up and read through the stuff.

In the main menu of root explorer, go to sdcard, copy the file, then navigate to the /system/app folder, mount r/w, and paste the file.

I had to reflash my phone with RSD lite.

Here is the link (includes instructions and necessary file links) I used to reflash:
